Sometimes the perfect Christmas is just making it through the day

I’m not a big planner when it comes to Christmas, or any event really, I just want to enjoy the day. But like most people, I have an idea of what I want the day to be like, and when it doesn’t go to plan, I can feel a little lost.

Let’s backtrack to Monday, December 23rd. We had agreed not to cook Christmas dinner this year after last year’s debacle — despite my huge effort, the kids took one look and went “Bleurgh, what’s this?” while Mr C and I ate everything ourselves as they picked at potatoes and probably ended up having pasta. So much for a family Christmas dinner.

Finding a restaurant this year proved challenging. Everywhere was offering 5-course set meals at 3 figures per head … excluding drinks, so that wasn’t going to happen. Our local Italian was closed, but we eventually settled on the Bavarian place at the end of our road AGAIN — they usually have tables on Christmas Day since Germans celebrate on Christmas Eve.

After weeks of everyone being sick and collectively taking antibiotics last week, the others catching norovirus in turn, and even the cat having stomach issues, I was quietly optimistic we’d all be healthy. But Monday night found me hugging the toilet bowl, my turn with the vomiting bug and a…
